Knob and tube remediation, installation of outlets

Our 80ish-year-old home came rife with knob and tube wiring that was concealed (so that the home inspection missed it), as well as a few other electrical oddities performed by the previous homeowner. It quickly became clear that our house was well short of the Electrical Code and needed remediation.

I had previously suggested Solutions Electrical to my father, having seen them several times on Holmes on Homes.

Their attitude was great and their service was fantastic. The work that needed to be done was unexpected to us and Joe at Solutions went above and beyond, understanding that this extensive job would not be cheap and yet finding a way to give me champagne service on a ginger ale budget.

The thing that set Solutions apart was their insistence that they would not do the job when my then five-month-old daughter was in the house due to the plaster dust and other particulates that would be stirred up and damaging to little lungs.

I live in Brampton but have recently purchased a older home in the Niagara area, and it needed to be rewired, so I called Frank who I have dealt with on many of my Electrical projects, to see if he would be able to do the work?? and found out that he has expanded out to Niagara. He put me in contact with Lance and man was he good! Quick and clean, I was very happy...! Frank the guys you have are real PRO's at what they do!

Panel and Electrical wiring

After purchasing our new home, already a 30 year old house, we called Frank and his crew in to replace an old fuse panel with the new breaker panel. As our electrical needs were more than this panel could handle, Frank also suggested a sub panel in order to not do as much damage (a large portion of the basement was already finished) as he put it you need power at the other end, the unfinished area, instead of running that many wires to this one panel why not run one from the existing to give you a separate panel and run all the wires in the unfinished area. Frank may have been thinking in advance for us, since then we've called him in to add an additional breaker to this sub panel as we purchased a Hot Tub and wiring it to the original panel would have caused damage a second time. Franks crew did a great job with minimal mess and they even cleaned up after themselves, unlike other contractors that have done work in my home in the past.

New electrical panel

What a great company. Joe arrived to look at the work and give me quote. He followed up with me a week later, answered all my questions and we booked an appointment.

Dave and Daniel showed up on time, polite and tidy and reviewed with me the work to be done.

At the end of the day, my basement was cleaned, any old holes were cemented, and the new panel was professionally done...they also fixed my side gate and got me a Tim Hortons coffee (no charge). Thanks Guys...

Thank You for your wonderful comments, It must have been their pleasure to work in your home, therefore I am just wondering why I did not get a coffee from Dave and Daniel since I set it all up? Thank again

Potlight install

Needed a trusted electrician to install several potlights on our main floor. Our philosophy was that if you install tiles improperly, they'll crack or break. If you do the electrical improperly, you get a fire - best to use someone who knows what they're doing! Avid watchers of Holmes on Holmes, we found Frank through the show's web site. Friends of ours had recommended others that did installs without permits, used cheap fixtures, etc. We didn't want to take the chance. Frank and Joe were very professional and explained everything to us. The contractors that did the work were professional and courteous. They minimized the amount of damage and were a pleasure to deal with. The only minor complaint we had was trying to get a confirmed appointment. Suspect this was simply because of our timing (near the holidays).

These guys know what they're doing and won't compromise to do it right. Recommended.

Quote Only **Work not done

I had this company quote doing electrical in my home. I detailed what I wanted done and they continued to answer that it would be better and more cost efficient to 'do it all at once' ...even though there were rooms that did not need upgrading and extra outlets that did not need to be added. They did not answer any questions directly, told us all the small additions they recommended were 'nominal' costs..and then gave us a quote for almost $20,000! I had the work done by another company at a third of the price and the job was perfectly done.

Company Response

Hi Folks, We have been rewiring century old homes for years now, it has been about 80% of our business. Quoting these projects has been a time consuming task, it is based on an educated guess for how many hours of labour would be needed plus material and permit, there is no such thing as a mathamatical formula to work out a quote since each home is unique. therefore an accurate quote must come from a company that has a vast amount of experience in retrofit wiring. Apples to Apples is what we need to compare, as a company we automaticaly add receptacles as needed the reason for this is quite simple, as an electrical contactor we are only requeried to replace and re wire what is existing, such as a bedroom that only has one or two receptacles, no plug in hallways kitchen counter with one receptacle. rewire only what is existing will pass our permit, YET once you live in the home and use EXTENTION CORDS for eg. your clock radio and lamp or for your coffee maker and toaster, You are in direct vioation of electical code. There are many companies that will rewire existing only. WE WILL NOT. does this make us more expensive NO. NOT when you compare that we provide WSIB for our employess (NO SUB contactor)$2,000,000. Liability insurace (because accidents Do happen) company benifits such as boots/ medication/ eye wear/ dental/ for our well groomed staff (happy employees and it shows). We at Solutions Electrical do not beleive in MAKE WORK projects. Taking the extra steps and doing it right does pay off, such as of June 2003 we have been installing hard wire for you smoke and C/O detectors interconnected between all floors, needless to say not ONE of our customers have called since legislation of smoke detectors, why whould they they are still ahead of the code. RECAP pay an electrican to rewire, pay a drywall/plaster person then pay a painter, only to find out that you may need to run extention cords in order to make your house a HOME OH!! and you're now in violation of code and could be facing fines of up to $50,000.00 if not rectified.............I am sorry that we care so much in trying to educate our customers, to the point that we are willing not to win all projects.

electrical rewiring

I have used Solutions on 4 different occasions on various investment properites as well as my own home. The work varied from a total rewiring to replace old knob and tube wiring to tracking a mysterious water leakage in our electrical panel. They provide excellent service and I would not hesitate to recommend them. Frank is great to deal with and really knows his stuff. All his staff that I have dealt with are real pros.

100 year old home

I have had 8 quotes, for rewiring my home the prices were all over the board. We narrowed it down to three, Solutions Electrical was not the cheapest, yet Joe made us feel comfortable. The job was on time and the damage was LESS than we expected. These guys are PRO'S we would recommend them to everybody. P.S. if they were not PRO'S Mike Holmes would not be using their services!!!!!!

Solutions Electrical is FANTASTIC. We had old knob and tube that needed to come out, minimal mess, great crew and excellent service. Frank was a real pro to deal with and did a thorough inspection of the house before giving us a quote. This is truly a professional outfit and we cannot recommend them enough.
