Moving from Toronto to Victoria

I contracted with GCVL to move me from Toronto to Victoria with pick-up on October 27th. The contract specified a delivery window of Nov. 3-11. I was told the actual date would be narrowed once the truck was underway.

The day before the move I learned GCVL had hired an agent company called AMS Transportation in Dundalk, Ontario to do the move. AMS picked up on October 27th, but that was the only thing done on time. My belongings sat in AMS's yard until Nov. 6th. AMS insisted on full payment before they delivered, while the contract specified payment on delivery.

I paid and was twice given a specific delivery date. Both dates were later than speicified in the contract and both times AMS informed me at the last moment they had to change the date. When I complained that they were late, AMS told me they were not bound by the date in the contract signed by GCVL.

I complained to GCVL and have to say everyone there was sympathetic and offered to help me get my delivery. In the end, there was nothing they could do. The delivery finally happened on November 21st.

To GCVL's credit, they offered me some financial compensation for the late delivery and the office staff was pleasant. However that doesn't make up for the stress or discomfort of sleeping on my floor without a stick of furniture for over a week while trying to juggle my plans. Bottom line: three and a half weeks to deliver is unacceptable.

Most importantly, I had hired GCVL for their reputation. Without consulting me, they turned over my contract to AMS, a company that is not registered with the Better Business Bureau, has had many complaints and would not honour the contract.

What could this company do to improve their services?
First, they should not have subcontracted with an unreliable company. Then, when they learned of the problem with AMS they should have ensured it was fixed or should have sent one of their own trucks to retrieve the goods and deliver it in accordance with the contract.

Company Response

Avi and I have discussed that our independant broker AMS who was delivering this for us had truck problems and had broken down. Which delayed the delivery of the move. I do not want my customers to go through undue stress, and going forward we will not be using AMS, we have taken them off our list.

I got a very great mover, Amar. This is the second time he moved our family cross the country. He was very professional, respecful and super clean. He made sure that everything was done professionally. He moved us with care when, which other companies don't seem to know how to do. He didn't break anything, which was surprising. We expected some things to break, but nothing did. We truly apprciate Amar's good work. This is a hard work and tough business, he has all of my respect. He was great and I'd definitely call him again.

Any advice to offer fellow homeowners facing a similar project?
We did shop around before we moved, and we found the driver/mover is the one makes all the difference. We have moved 6 times in the last 10 years. We like Amar the best.

There were two movers and a driver and they were all extremely pleasant, well mannered and hard working. They were also very courteous and on time. It was a beautiful day and I offered them coffee and they were very friendly and cooperative. No complaints at all. They were tremendous

At the old location, there were some large pieces of furniture that had to be taken down stairs and GCVL took care of making sure the furniture did not get damaged. We were phoned to let us know when the truck was coming and it came right on time. The movers had everything ready to go. They had a "game plan" to see how things were going to be assembled at the other end. They explained the whole process to us. It was just great.

I gave it a good rating because i felt that everything got here in a timely fashion and everything seemed to be in a good condition. I was just a little bit disappointed because they did not come on Saturday but they phoned me and told me that they were going to come on Sunday. I was flexible, but that was a bit of a surprise.

The driver did a good job of staying in touch with me. He called me back several times about how he could come in and out of the building because I live in a condo. Later on he figured out how to do it in Google so everything worked out fine.
I'm overall very satisfied with the service.

Fantastic Job, thank you. The service I received was great. The guys were very friendly and they showed up when they said they were going to and they delivered the stuff when they said they were going to. I'm very happy with the service I received from this company, especially when I compare it with the service I've received in previous moves with other companies, which was not very efficient.

Move from Vancouver to Calgary

This was probably the worst move I have ever had. We were moving our daughter to Calgary and had arranged with GCVL for a tentative delivery date of Sept 1 with the final date to be confirmed at time of pick up. The contents of her apartment were picked up on Aug 29 and we were given a delivery date of Sept 2 with exact time to be confirmed. The final delivery time was finally changed to Sept 3 between 1 and 2 pm. On Sept 2 we were called by the dispatcher to say he wanted to change the delivery date again to Sept 4 because the truck was coming from Victoria and missed its ferry reservations. I told the dispatcher this was not acceptable as we flew out to Calgary to assist my daughter with the move and this would not give us enough time before our flight back. We were then assured that the truck would be loaded and leave Vancouver on the morning of Sept 3 with delivery likely between 6 and 8 pm that evening. This was confirmed at noon on Sept 3 when the truck was apparently at Hope. We were given the cell number of the driver and attempted to call him several times during the day but got no response. When no one showed up by 9 pm we tried calling the dispatcher but again got no response. The driver phoned soon after to say he was still at least 5 hours away but would deliver the next morning at 8 am. We were originally told the truck left Vancouver at 6:30 am and the drive took about 11 hours, so someone was not giving us the straight goods. We then had to scramble to find a hotel on the Labour Day long weekend which was no easy feat. The next morning we got a call from the driver to say his truck broke down 20 km out of Calgary and he was calling a tow truck - he was not sure when he could deliver. Numerous calls to the dispatcher were made and none were ever returned. In the end a rather sad looking elderly truck from Riverbend Moving arrived via tow truck at 11:45 am. When it finally left, a large puddle of oil remained as the final reminder of our move. We incurred 2 extra nights hotel expenses and extra expenses to change our flight back to Vancouver.

As a follow up to this - Great Canadian offered us compensation to cover most of the cost of the 2 extra nights accomodation in a hotel which we accepted. Other out of pocket costs associated with the delay did not qualify for reimbursement. They assured me that my move was not typical and they get few complaints. All I know is that unfortunately our experience was not positive.
