thermostat swap out

Home owners beware. McKinnon is a bad company to do business with. They mishandled a thermostat swap which resulted in my home being 14C for weeks during November, December and January. Their techs were late or didn’t show up at all. They were not knowledgeable and they made false representations about my heating system. Now I am seeking judicial remedy against hundreds of dollars of unauthorized charges.

Company Response

I must say that it is quite ironic that a client who is so unhappy with our company, services and staff emailed me personally (after the fact) and requested a Service Contract for his heating system. It seems that we as contractors often get mixed messages from our clients: On the one hand, we make mistakes (and are viewed as almost "criminal") yet on the other hand, the client realizes the value in a contractor who shows up, tries their best and ultimately attempts to make the customer's experience a positive one. Yes, this client has pursuited this $800.00 matter in Small Claims Court (which we are defending) but when I questioned him about how his heating system is working, the answer was clearly yes, it is working well. I maintain that my staff and I always try our best and at times, we fall short of the mark. In those situations, we always remedy things as best as we can. This is precisely what happened with this specific client. Derek, I wish you the best of luck with your next heating contractor, I hope the experience meets with your expectations.

Radiant heating repair

I called about a lack of heat in upstairs radiators.

Their first attempt at diagnosis and treatment (after a no-show on the appointment) was to replace a pump, even though it seemed to be fine. Sure enough, the new pump did not fix the problem.

The second attempt involved two guys spending several hours fiddling with boiler settings and googling on their blackberry(!) trying to figure it out. The problem was finally solved by cranking open a stuck valve they had overlooked.

Multiple messages about the bill that later came off my CC - without an invoice - went unreturned. Dates when the manager promised to get back to me after 'looking into it' came and went without a word. When I did get a response, his story about what happened changed several times. Things hit their low point in a surprisingly unpleasant phone call with the owner.

Company Response

Simon,
We always try our best to rectify a client's home comfort issue as quickly and as cost efficient as possible. I understand your frustration and dissapointment with our company. In light of this, I have tried my best to compensate you appropriately with a complimentary one year Protection Plan on your boiler. I am hopeful that your next experience with our company will be a more pleasant one.

Air Conditioner

We called Mckinnon for service on an older A/C unit. Based on the age and the problem we were told that it was not worth fixing. We were told that if we purchased a new unit through Mckinnon that there would be no charge for the service call. We were very pleased with the service technician.
We purchased a new unit and were told again that there would be no charge for the initial service call. The unit was installed promptly and we again were very pleased with the service.
The dissatisfaction came when the initial service call was charged to our credit card. I spoke with Glen twice and was told that it would be refunded. The third time I called and was angry with service. The fee was finally reversed to my visa - a month after the initial charge to my card.
I wouldn't recommend Mckinnon based on the follow up service - unless you want to spend hours chasing them down!

Furnace and AC installation

We had a furnace that was not to building code (not enough maintenance clearance space) and the new furnace had to be rotated 90 degrees in a confined space in order to be to code. The air return had to be rebuilt and everything reconfigured for the new layout. The space was cramped! McKinnon heating/cooling came up with some unique, clever solutions to a very challenging installation. Workers made everything so organized, tidy and clean we were amazed. Thanks especially to Tran!
PS - We recommended McKinnon to neighbours for AC and they're happy too.

Air Conditining - Space Pak System

Mckinnon installed a new condenser unit at my home for about $2000 three years ago. It never worked. I have been told by other contractors that it was poorly installed and that my original problem was improperly diagnosed.

After sending a clearly unqualified technician to have a look, McKinnon simply stopped returning my calls altogether. I ran out of steam and gave up on them at a loss. I am having their "new" unit replaced this week by [another company].

Repair furnance humidifier

I contacted several HVAC companies to have my furnace humidifier repaired; I was basically told each time to buy a new unit as repairing was a waste of time. When I spoke with Glen he took the time to listen, ask questions and make recommendations for fixing the unit as well as cleaning my furnance. The service technician, Fred, was prompt, polite, thorough and offered suggestions to ensure I had a safe home environment. It was a pleasure to deal with Glen and his team, I highly recommend them.

Whether it was at night or the weekend or in regular hours, whether doing repairs or installation, they were prompt, polite, knowledgeable and, without exception, very helpful.

Furnace Repair

I called McKinnon to service my furnace, which I purhased less than a year ago. I was told a technician would be coming by within 3 hours. I waited and waited and finally after 7.5 hours someone came by. The technician was not only tardy but rude too. He said the problem was the motor and that an order needed to be placed for a new part and that it would take a few days. A few days went by and I called McKinnon to check on the status. Apparently no order was placed, nor did they have a record of the technician attendng my house. Their remedy was to have another technician take a look at the furnace. Needless to say, I was fed up and called another company. I would not recommend this company to anyone.

Company Response

Hello Sam,
As at this point you are anonymous, I cannot check our datatbase and see how we clearly did not serve you well. Should you wish to contact me, I would gladly return any monies which were paid to us for service you obviously did not receive. We do try our best to remedy no heat situations as quickly as possible yet often we are at the mercy of our suppliers and other factors beyond our control. We also stand behind our one year labour warranty so it is unclear to me what happened. I am very sorry that your experience with our company was a neagative one. I am always available to our clients and should you want to discuss this matter further, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Electric Furnace Servicing

I've been dealing with Preferred Air going back to 1987. Nonetheless--because we're a bit outside Preferred Air's normal area--when our rather antiquated electric furnace started to give trouble a few weeks ago, I panicked and made the mistake of calling in another, much closer company that was very highly rated on HomeStars. Without going into the several frustrating and needlessly costly missteps that followed, I was very disappointed in the service I received. So I called in Preferred Air to finish the job properly. This they have now done in their usual highly satisfactory way. The father was doing the work alone back in 1987, now apparently he has two sons working alongside. These folks are great: responsive to calls and questions--everything explained in detail--fast service and turn up on time--and honest in their dealings. I will remember to call them first next time.

New Furnace System

My experience with Mckinnon was exceptional. I'm towards the end of a complete renovation of my High Park home. Many of the trades were not exactly pleasant to deal with. Mckinnon was highly professional and just plain "nice" throughout the process. The salesperson spent a lot of time with me on the phone and in my home, patiently going through all the options that were available. He pulled together all the information I needed with regards to rebates from the government and the utility company. The quote was specific and clear. While the pricing was not the least expensive, I felt confident that Mckinnon would be around to back up their work. The installers did a very good job so far as I can tell. The work is tidy and precise. Cleanup was good and they respected my home. The system is working quietly as promised and to date I'm extremely pleased with Mckinnon. I recommend Michael Nepom and the Mckinnon team without reservation.
