Reference letter for Daniel Zhao of Home Horizon General Contracting Ltd.
Let me preface this by noting that I interviewed 5 contractors prior to undertaking my substantial home renovation which involved a re-locating plumbing/ electrical/HVAC for new kitchen, cut outs of structural walls, fire place addition, new drywall, new finishes/mill work/ fixtures through out... in an 100+ year Toronto home... which had been renovated in the past, by amateur handymen at best.
While HH’s price was not the lowest, nor the highest, I was encouraged by the positive referrals from 2 acquaintances that used HHGC services. I was impressed with the time that Daniel took to really understand my project & budget. Prior to moving forward, over a 4 month period, Daniel and I had several in-person meetings/ phone calls to discuss the specifics, go over blue prints & permits, ensuring that we were on the same page.
I was comforted by Daniel’s technical knowledge, attention to detail as he covered all facets of the projects from big to small — especially the unexpected contingencies.
I am a very particular person and demand perfection, high quality of craftsmen-ship which is exactly what I received from Daniel and his team. He was meticulous in reviewing every corner / caulking /paint/ grout and everything that was important to me. Daniel told me several times while putting in late evenings and weekends .. “it’s not finished when it’s done, it’s finished when it’s perfect for you”. I believe that this is the DNA of Home Horizon. Daniel did not take any short cuts in completing the job or use cheap material, like I have experienced with other GC’s. Most importantly he took the time to show me what he did behind the drywall, get my opinion/preference/ approval on certain design details. Given Daniel’s experience, he also counselled me on the lay out, finishes (tiles/ fireplace/ back splash) etc., better then my interior designer, I must say.
Daniel did not gauge me on prices for additional work that had to be complete over and above our contract and he was great at managing sub trades, dealing with city inspectors etc. He was honest & fair though-out the process while being reachable by phone/text. Most importantly, he stayed within the project timelines.
We developed a great relationship & trust which made the project a much more enjoyable experience. Towards the end of the renovation, I had booked a vacation- I left the keys in Daniel’s hand knowing he would complete the finishing touches. When I returned, the project was done - exceeding my expectations (which is pretty hard to do). Daniel also organized a full top2bottom deep construction clean & vent cleaning.
All in all, I would have no hesitation in recommending Daniel & Home Horizon to my friends and family for any renovation- big or small.
I look forward to working with him on my next project. Feel free to reach out to me directly should you have any questions or a quick tour of my home to see his work first hand.
