New Roof: Shingles and Plywood Changes
My mother's house, a 50-year-old backsplit with its original plywood roof, began to leak this year due to the heavy rainstorms we experienced in Southern Ontario. To find the best solution, I obtained quotes from nine different roofing companies. I wanted to understand the best products, the right approach, where to install new plywood, whether to use a drip edge with the new shingles, and the pros and cons of closed valleys versus metal valleys.
Some companies provided quotes remotely using Google Satellite images. While there's nothing inherently wrong with remote assessments, having a contractor visit the house, meet in person, and take the time to answer all questions is invaluable.
In the end, Mike and his team did an outstanding job on my parents' roof. I visited the job site daily and found the crew to be professional, polite, hardworking, and responsive. Any changes or concerns we had were addressed promptly and professionally by Mike and his team.
Although I received cheaper quotes, I believe that quality should not be compromised when it comes to your roof. We chose Better Contracting for several reasons:
1. They recommended and used the best shingles on the market: Certainteed / Landmark.
2. They used the same high-quality underlayment and ice shield as the shingle manufacturer, ensuring the best product throughout.
3. They have been in business for many years and have excellent reviews.
4. They were incredibly responsive, patient, and thorough in answering all my detailed questions.
5. Whenever I called the office for clarity, the owner, Mike, answered the phone personally every time.
Special thanks to Mike, the foreman on-site (Dickson), and the rest of the team for an excellent job.
Enjoy the rest of the summer!
