Very positive experience and would recommend this company

I needed an electrician to hook up a power inverter and battery for a battery back up system for my sump pump at my home. The sump pump is located on the exterior, in a sump well and not inside the house in the basement, as most sump systems are. We had a power outage for about 10 hours in Nov/23, where it also rained heavily. As a result, the basement flooded because there was no power to the sump pump.

I put out a request through Homestars and Expert was one of the companies that responded to my request. I spoke with Caleb initially, and explained that I needed. He wasn't completely sure that they would be able to do the job, but said he would send his most experienced guy, Mike out to do a free estimate.

Mike came out at the scheduled time and seemed very knowledgeable. After explaining what I needed done, he wrote up an estimate for me and gave me some suggestions about what I needed to purchase. I bought the inverter, which was specifically designed to be a UPS for the sump and a 200W LiFePO4 battery, which matched the specs that the inverter required.

I called back the head office to book the appointment and spoke with the owner Scott. As it turns out, Scott was very knowledgeable about sump pump systems and knew exactly what my predicament was and my needs for the battery back up system. He took the time to give me some additional suggestions, which was appreciated.

The appointment was booked for today, Dec. 3/24 and Mike came right on time, as before. He took the time to walk me through what he was going to do and explained it in layman's terms, so even a noob like myself could understand it. The job was completed and everything is installed, nice and neat. Mike tested the system by shutting off the breaker, and I could see where the power inverter, switched on and was drawing from the battery. To test that the sump pump actually worked, I put a hose into the sump well and started to fill it with water and switched off the breaker. The inverter switched to battery power and the sump pump started to pump out the water. Everything appears to be working as it should. Peace of mind has been restored.

Mike was very professional, friendly and knowledgeable and gave me what I believe to be a fair and honest quote. I wouldn't hesitate to use them again and would recommend them to anyone who is looking for an electrician company that is knowledgeable, fair, punctual/reliable and focused on customer service.

Company Response

Thank you for your feedback on this matter. We definitely take this extremely seriously. There are quite a few things that you listed in your review that we would like to address, as there seems to be a series of misunderstandings that took place regarding this work.
1.Pricing: We try to price out all of our jobs as affordably as possible. In this case, the technician had already applied the $40 coupon to the price of the job, and he had priced the job out at less than the standard rate in order to get the work done for you. However, if this was not clear in the written invoice, we would be happy to refund the $40 in order to clear things up.
2. Work completed: at the time that it was requested for the technician to return, it was brought to our attention that the request was to have one of the heaters lowered, as it was higher than the other heaters that were installed. The heater that was higher was installed on hardwood, and the other heaters were installed on tile. As tile is not flammable, those heaters are able to be installed lower, while a heater over hardwood is required to be a minimum of one inch above the ground. When this was expressed, you continued to ask to move the heater lower towards the hardwood. We are not willing to do work that puts the homes of our customers or their neighbours at risk.
In regard to the gaps in the wall, we discussed that the wall was warped and that the gaps would need to be filled with fireproof caulking, which is typically done by a drywaller or painter. In this circumstance, you mentioned that there was a painter coming and that this would be doable by that company.
3. The circumstances surrounding the return visit: If tempers were lost in this visit by the technician, we definitely appreciate you letting us know. From what the technician has told us, he was attempting to complete the work that you requested, and he left the home when you asked him to do so. If there was a mixup in timing or a miscommunication about when the electrician was meant to come, we would like to apologize for that again, as we previously did on the phone. We discussed things with Brad, and he has let us know what his side of the story is. While the two stories sound different, he did tell us that he tried to call you afterwards to apologize for his side of things, and that you did not want to hear from him and that you proceeded to yell at him for trying to apologize. We would like to help however we can, but our attempts to smooth things over from both the office and from the technician have been met with hostility. Please let us know if we can work towards a resolution with you on this matter.

Exhaust Fan Replacement

Our Community Hall is located in South Vancouver. The Building has just celebrated its 100th Anniversary. So having the sub attic exhaust fan fail was not a surprise.
Expert Electric has been our company when ingenuity and perseverance is needed. There was no way of accessing the motor from inside the attic.

Brad was able to source the replacement motor from a USA supplier saving our Association the cost of a full change out. Although the price was $5,300.00, the major portion of the cost was the rental of the scissor lift required to remove and replace the motor from the exterior of the building. Twenty-five feet off the ground and concealed behind a huge metal Hub.

Again Expert Electric came though for us.

Smart thermostats switched from standard

Electrician came late without apologies. I had requested Switch out of 4 outlets and 3 thermostats being switched to smart thermostats. I mentioned to the electrician that 1 of the thermostats has only 2 wires and I was aware that 3 wires are needed for installation of the smart thermostat. He spoke to me like I had no clue about electrical work but I had actually been through this already before with another electrician who explained to me How the additional wiring needed can be run through from the adjacent wiring. This company's electrician didn't seem to know anything about that period in any case he initially "d me the cost for outlet installation let installation and I had agreed on that cost. However because I was concerned that 1 of the 3 thermostats couldn'the thermostats could be installed I said that I'd only agree to having the outlets installed. He At that point went on a rant about how he needs to make money for his company and that it cost money to buy gas to come to clients homes to do work. Again, I had actually expressed agreement to have the outlet switch performed but he wanted me to agree to either all the work or at least the thermostat switches, Even though, after asking repeatedly for the estimate for the switches of the thermostats if only 2 of 3 are installed, the cost was about $50 more than had I just had the outlets installed. I would have rather had no thermostats installed, which is what I actually asked in the 1st place before he pushed and pushed and complained about needing to make money, and Just have the outlets installed instead.

Breaker panel & lighting upgrade

The site of the service was at a hall in Vancouver that will be 100 years old in 2023. Had the breaker panel brought up to code and had the lower hall T12 lights changed out to LED. The technician (Brad) is old school. Knows his stuff. Work was done in a timely manner, on budget with no high pressure upselling. Would definitely recommend this company.
