In October 2012, I contacted Great Canadian.Their sales rep, S.R., came by and we signed a contract to have new shingling installed. In the contract I specified a clause the anti-ice dam heat wiring around the NW edge of the house should be removed and replaced by the roofer upon completion of the re-shingling as it was prone to ice dam formation..
The project started after snow had fallen. I set aside my misgivings about this as they seemed to be the consummate pros
My request about the wiring wasn't passed on to the roofer and he seriously damaged the wiring while removing it. He apparently thought it was to be removed only.
I made a quick visit to the roof and I inquired about the wiring as I was concerned that it be replaced properly. The roofer said in accented English that the wiring didn't work and pointed to a small ice build up. I replied that yes it work but I didn't mention that I had unplugged it previously as I was expecting the work to be done. I reiterated that it be properly replaced. To my knowledge the wiring worked as I had checked it for continuity and observed the results of it's operation previously.
I wasn't aware that the roofer had been very rough with the heat cable and cut it in several places. The roofer replaced the wiring but unknown to me it was unserviceable.
The winter of 2012-13 was warm and snowy and perfect for forming large ice dams. When I needed the heat cable it didn't work. The ice dam formed and grew.
Upon the initial signs of water intrusion I complained to Great Canadian.
Water entered the interior of the house and seriously damaged a portion of ceiling and the stipple.
Great Canadian manager and the salesman went up on the roof and removed the ice dam but gouged many shingles in the process.
Great Canadian bought a replacement heat cord but it was forty feet shorted that the one I had installed, As well you can't install them in winter conditions.
They claimed that their insurance would look after the damaged ceiling but I haven't heard a peep out of them and they're not returning calls.
My experience with Great Canadian Saskatoon was a horror show and I profoundly regret the day I called them..
I would never recommend to anyone, getting roofing done after the snow has begun to fall
I would never recommend Great Canadian although others have found them alright in summertime conditions.
