Mast. Bath, Fireplace, Bedroom Closets

This was to be a 4-week project that only ended 4+ months later when we got tired of fighting them for things they agreed to, (photos of the work done on the roof for example), and just wanted them out of our house. The lack of communication was frustrating, and on multiple occasions along the way we asked to meet with Adam on-site to discuss how we were going to get back on-track...each time our request was ignored. While at the end of the day the work looks to be well done, it definitely wouldn't have been the case if we weren't all over them about things they missed or completed incorrectly along the way. This was a daily process.

It's worth noting that once the job was complete we received a nice thank you letter from them with a $100 LCBO Gift Card and a request to rate them on HomeStars. This was followed by an email a short while later with another request for a HomeStars review AND the offer to write the review for us which only requires us to "confirm the review". Seem a bit sketchy?

I firmly support the suggestion in the 1-star rating of June 3, 2014 that you should speak to people directly that have worked with GarCon to get a broader picture. They should be happy to provide references.

The route we take to get to the final product is just as important as the final product itself.

Company Response

We share your frustration in agreeing that your project took longer than expected. We don't often do long winded responses, and we don't want to come across as defensive, but we feel it necessary to address two of your comments: Your comment that we offered to write an ACCURATE and FAIR review on your behalf for homestars that we would send to you for approval. This is something we OFFERED to our clients since the beginning of homestars only as a convenience. We would not have posted something you yourself did not AGREE with. As we are sure you understand this is important for our business, and at times the effort of going online, signing and writing a review has not been a priority for our customers. Secondly, your comment about the LCBO gift cards seems to insinuate that we were attempting to "bribe" a positive review. We are sincerely sorry that you took it that way. We recognized that your project did not go entirely as planned and the gift was just that, a gift, for you to enjoy in your beautiful home. Again, we are very sorry for the negative experiences, we agree that the road to to completion should be pleasant, but we are very glad to hear that you are pleased with the quality of the finished project and we don't feel that it warrants a 1. All the best in the future.

Front Porch Construction

Working with this company was a nightmare from day one. I am now almost 8000 poorer and have another construction company here to clean up the mess they made of my front porch.

Adam was contacted in February, provided an estimate and promised to complete the job by April. The work didn't commence until July. When the work began it was realized that he had not inspected the pillars and I would need to purchase metal posts. fine, so I did. Construction began and again because a proper inspection wasn't done prior to beginning, the project ran into problems because the substrate for the pillars wasn't stable.

I then asked for a complete inspection and was told that the front porch would have to be completely demolished and rebuilt. Adam as much as admitted that he was out of his depth.

I asked that they clean up after the inspection and put the porch in a safe condition. The estimate I had for completing this work was over $2000. I fired them and now have someone cleaning up after them and putting the site in a safe condition and it will cost me $350. GOUGING GOUGING GOUGING and very incompetent.

Buyer beware.

I'm still waiting for them to drop off the steel posts that I've paid for and expect that will never happen. Almost $8000 down the drain and if I had the time I'd take them to small claims court.

True story.

I have the feeling that all the other glowing reviews must be planted comments by freinds and family. This experience has even started to turn me off of home stars, unfortunately. All the other trades I've found here have been fantasic. I guess there's a rotten apple in every barrel of good ones.

Complete gut

Adam is fantastic. Call him! He is very thorough and very well organized...just look at his quotations. After having completed three renovations previously (with three different contractors), I can safely say that Adam's highly detailed quotation is the only way to avoid those mid-project surprises that everyone hears/reads about with other builders. Not only did Adam do everything he said he was going to do, but he did it WHEN he said he would. Amazing. I strongly suggest that you use Garcon for your next project.

Addition and Complete Renovation

we just finished are addition and renovation with garcon. we couldnt be happier. they were extremely responsive from our initial call for a quote, all the way thru to the final complete of our project and deficiency list. the price did not change along the way and only paid extra for items we added to the project. the work was done very well and all the garcon staff and their tradespeople were very easy to get along and communicate with. we would for sure use them again the in the future. Adam was always there for us not only as a client, but he treated us like his friend. he always had our best interest in mind. very pleased with our new house.

3rd Fl Reno

At project commencement PM est. project would take 4-5wks. Garcon had trouble sourcing labourers and tradesmen. Instead of 4-5wks, the project took 11wks to complete. Labourers quit and were fired mid-project. The PM was changed. That lack of continuity caused problems. Generally the guys doing the work were good and we're happy with the finished project. Parting shot: Garcon left a large ladder (for 2wks after it was needed) in a common lane between my house and my neighbours. My neighbour apparently tripped over the ladder and broke his hand. Now, Garcon and I are being sued by my neighbour

Major Structural Work to Historic Building

After doing our homework and gathering numerous quotes for some major structural work that we required to a historic building in Leslieville, we decided to work with Adam and his team to pull off the important task. Adam, Evan and Larry were all extremely professional and pulled the work off with amazing efficiency. In addition, they always left the worksite extremely clean and were extremely responsive via phone and email. Would definitely recommend GarCon to anyone looking for a general contractor that truly delivers on their promise. Thanks, guys!

Basement renovation

Our basement renovation project with GarCon ran into a number of issues along the way but ultimately GarCon showed themselves to be competent and trustworthy. I would absolutely work with them again.

We began the project at a time when the company had expanded quickly and was having a hard time adapting. The work started late and there were many times when the work halted with no explanation. We had to follow up a number of times to keep the project on track. Fortunately, things improved considerably a few months in.

To compound the scheduling problems, we ran into problems with the plans (not GarCon's fault) unexpected issues with the house (also not their fault), as well, they made a few mistakes of varying severity. But this is where GarCon proved themselves - they dealt with each problem as it came along, made sure we were ultimately satisfied with the results, and absorbed the cost of mistakes where appropriate.
