"Sam the handyman" advertised his services on Kijiji Daily deals and purchasing that voucher enabled me to get upto 50 shingles replaced on my roof as required. I read his reviews before purchasing (all of them said he was good) but I am now repenting for purchasing his services. I felt it was very unprofessional and they damaged my roof for not purchasing their additional services.
I called "Sam the Handyman" and emailed him to replace a few shingles on my roof which flew off and fell in my backyard due to the heavy winds earlier in the year. My house is fairly new (about 5 years old) so everything else was fine on the roof with no complaints. Sam came and examined the roof and said would replace the shingles but would come back 3 days later on a weekday since he did not have a ladder long enough. He also suggested 2 enhancements to the roof which according to him the builder should have put in when the house was constructed. He gave me 3 days time to think about it and said that he would put in those enhancements along with the shingles when he comes back with the ladder. I thought about it and did not respond back on the enhancements but confirmed the appointment to fix the shingles only.
Why I felt the services were unprofessional:
4 days later I get an email from him saying he fixed the shingles on my roof and I was surprised at that because he never spoke to me or called me when he came back to fix it. Without my permission, he climbed up on my roof and supposedly fixed it without even giving me a chance to inspect the work he had done. I emailed him back asking why he did not call me or ring the bell before he did the work and I get a rude reply back from him without any answer for my question.
Why I am repenting for purchasing his services:
The weekend after this episode happened, there was heavy rain in the area and I stepped into the powder room to find out that there was lots and lots of water coming from the vent in the ceiling where the exhaust was installed. It felt as if a pipe had broken and all the water was coming in through the vent. I entered my garage and there was water coming in through all the corners along the walls. After quick inspection inside and turning off the water supply I realized it was not a plumbing issue and I called in a professional roofing company to get the roof checked. They inspected the roof when there was a break in the rain and said that someone had made a hole in the valley of the roof where the metal plates are. It looked like a hole made with a Hammer and its from that hole where the rain water was flowing into the house. The hole was a little bigger than a toonie coin. This was never an issue before as it rained a week earlier too and there was no issue + if there was such a big hole earlier Sam would have seen it as the enhancement he suggested was more or less around the same area where the hole was. Based on the size of the hole, area of the hole, life of the roof, inspection by professional roofer and the fact that there was no issue of leaking a few days prior when it rained heavily, I felt that a hole in my roof was made on purpose for refusing the additional services he was trying to sell me. I had to pay $500 to get the hole fixed by the other roofing company and as a courtesy they also replaced some more shingles that were loose in the same area that Sam had replaced earlier and determined that they were in good state.
