Drain work

I wanted to address some drain issues in the basement of a 100+ year old bungalow in Toronto. Using Homestars as my primary resource, I contacted and met with several companies. Igor from Mr. Plumber immediately impressed me with his knowledge of his trade. He quickly assessed and clearly explained the issues with the existing system and offered a low-impact, effective and affordable solution that others overlooked.

I did encounter one minor, unforeseen issue that only became apparent after the job was complete. Vlad, the owner of the company, took my concerns very seriously, and ensured that the issue was addressed to my satisfaction. Special mention goes to Slava, who did the initial work and also returned to make the modification. On both occasions he was exceptionally friendly and courteous and left the job site spotless.

Mr. Plumber is solid, professional company that takes obvious pride in their work. I would not hesitate to recommend them or use their services again.

Drain work

I am in the process of updating a 100+ year old home and have hired several tradespeople using Homestars as my primary resource. I contracted Mr. Plumber to perform some drain repair work because they offered a simple solution that others overlooked. Part of this work involved moving the floor drain from a hallway area to the furnace room. I was told that this was done for aesthetic reasons.

The job required removing a section of subfloor, revealing a previously unknown basement leak. The water pooled at the area where the floor drain originally was located. It was then that I learned that floor drains, especially in older homes, are located at the the low point of the floor for just this reason.

When I contacted Mr. Plumber about my concerns, no solution was offered and the person actually became quite aggressive and argumentative on the phone. After dealing with the waterproofing issues, I was ready to reinstall the flooring, but wanted to resolve the floor drain issue first. Several emails to Mr. Plumber went unanswered and when I finally got someone on the phone, I was instructed to rent a saw from Home Depot and cut drainage trenches in the floor myself. I was shocked that a company would actually advise a client to take power tools to their work. I thought to ask about the impact of this on my warranty, but it was clear at this point that Mr. Plumber was not interested in addressing my concerns.

I can appreciate justifying choices based on aesthetics, but when it comes to my homes' primary systems, I'll take functionality over appearances any day. I have had several other tradespeople through the house since, and they have all been surprised at the decision to move the floor drain. Mr. Plumber was exceptionally prompt and polite in dealing with me prior to having the work done. Once my cheque was cashed, however, they wanted nothing to do with me. I am left feeling quite disappointed and abandoned. Mr. Plumber may do decent work, but you'd better hope they get it right the first time, because their follow-up customer service is non-existent.
