Leaking Flat Roof

I called Academia to fix a leaking flat roof. This was just days after the big snow in Toronto in December. Amazingly, within hours Gordon sent his crew to take a look at the problem and immediately fix the leak; even though it had started to rain. In addition, Gordon came by to take a look at the repair and to provide me numerous recommendations for the flat roof and attic to ensure that they would be in good shape going forward. At first, I thought these numerous recommendations were excessive, but I came to realize that this was merely a reflection of Gordon being a perfectionist. Thanks Gordon for your prompt response to my call, the fix itself and for the good advice; all at a reasonable price.

Bob, I thank you for the review. Sincerely I hope we end up doing a lot more work for you in order to prove that it can be done. It is unfortunate that there is such a limited amount of personnel to properly evaluate and remedy all the issues that make for a properly functioning attic. There can be a minimum of 30 issues that need to be attended to in order to achieve a healthy attic. The impact a poor attic can have on a residential home is major to say the least. It goes with that saying " do not judge a book by it's cover" This holds so true in regards to a home. So many new custom homes are faulty and getting moldy it is outrageous, all because The attic, and all the components in it are overlooked and not investigated properly. Please check your attic every winter when it is super cold out., " if you see frost or mold" deal with it before it runs down the interior walls and possibly cause a mite infestation.

Attic Moisture + Venting Problem

Gordon is simply the finest and most experienced roof/attic specialist in the GTA. I give him my highest recommendation.

Background: new custom home (~5yrs), with low sloping roof. Builder (no longer in business) did not complete work to a high level of craftsmanship to cut costs.

Problem: recurring high humidity/moisture in my attic that was causing significant water damage in ceiling/walls, and risk of harmful mould.

This problem persisted even after other roof/contractors had previously attempted to repair the problem. It was out of my ongoing frustration to find a solution that Gordon Bailey was recommended to me by an insulation vendor (who noted that Gordon had a reputation for solving complex cases).

Immediately after meeting Gordon, I knew I was in the care of highly experienced professional who easily distinguished himself from his peers, examples:

- knowledge is extensive + deep + extends well beyond roofing
- rigour and detail in searching for the root cause
- ability to explain complex problems
- repairing all related problems, including those indirectly related such as barriers, plumbing, venting, insulation, etc.
- flexibility in payment terms once identifying that the project was much more extensive than original impression (cost)
- ongoing follow up and dedication to ensure the problem was remedied

Gordon was an absolute pleasure to deal with, and I now understand why he came so highly recommended.

He is an absolute master of his craft, and I am certain that my attic problem would remain unsolved if it were not for Gordon.

Thank you Neil and I only wish that you had mentioned that 7 of your neighbors all were in the same boat. I was also very grateful you allowed me to use your home for training purposes and for getting your neighbors on board. I really love your family and am privileged to call you a friend. Yours was one of the hardest challenges in my career and for that I thank you. I will not mention the company estimators I was training however I will say that i would not make that mistake again, I should have trained the actual persons that do the work. It is easy to sell the work however getting it done properly is another story in itself. The video HomeStars made on Youtube"U Roofing 101" explains why.

Roof, Eaves, Facia and Insulation Replacement

Gordon was honest and upfront about the entire process he follows, providing us with clarity and confidence about what to expect. He provided options at every juncture, as well as recommendations on his preferred course of action. He also took photos before, during and after to detail what was done. The quality of his work was superb, as was the site cleanup at the end of each day. The only challenge was...timeline. Gordon has some health issues that extended the timeline significantly, which is the reason he didn't get a 10. I would still use him again regardless.

It is like they say, you can have it all but you have nothing if not your health. I thank you Karlo for such an honest review and your patience. My health will always be an issue and that is just plain bad luck for me. I am grateful that all my clients understand this issue of mine and their belief in me certainly helps to make me feel much better. Happy New Year to you and your wonderful family.

Roof repair

I don't hesitate to recommend Academia Roofing, and its owner, Gordon Bailey.

We were having problems with a large flat roof, called several roofers, and got their explanations of the problem, possible solutions and estimates.

After meeting them all, we felt most confident going with Gordon, and were not disappointed. Gordon seemed to be the most knowledgeable of the roofers we called and we felt that he could do the work required and would do it well.

The roof had to be replaced, and he saw several solutions to do a better job than the original installation.
The job did take a while to finish, but we were well satisfied with the work of Gordon and his men. He was prompt in responding to any requests we had, to the extent that we feel he will be available in the future should we need any further assistance.

Most gratifying in his work was the personal interest he seemed to take in our house. He noticed other minor repairs that had to be done apart from the roof.... and made time to fix them himself or have one of his men fix them. On finishing up after repairing some damage inside the house from the original leak, he made certain that we were fully satisfied with the finished work. He hired other men, as a mason and painter, who were also very capable and efficient.

I'm pleased to recommend him and his company. I think I can add that if the house he is repairing is older, clients of his will probably happily discover that he doesn't hold back from spending time, and work, to do other minor repairs that might be needed. He gave an estimate for the project at the beginning, and didn't change that despite voluntarily adding some time and expense to make those repairs.

Father Bernard, God Bless You! I must admit that your attitude and demeanor makes one want to be a better man. As a company we are small. In our hearts, we are big. This is due to client's like you and the others that really do appreciate the extras and care that we put into your homes and hearts. I really make an effort to restore client's faith in contractors and it is not difficult when honestly is always at the forefront. I am far from perfect However I treat my clients homes better than my own and do take time to source the best in order to achieve the best. Reviews like yours make it very worthwhile and it is a wonderful feeling to fulfill better than ones expectations. Happy New Year.

Fix moisture issues in the attic and repairs to flat roof

After renovating a bathroom I found that I had a "moisture" issue in my attic. After speaking with 5 different specialist in the field, all of them were capable and willing to eliminate the mold in the attic, but not one of them could tell me why/how it got there in the first place. It took me over 6 months before I got some straight answers. After speaking to Gordon Bailey of Academia Roofing & Attics I had a thorough understanding of what was wrong and what needed to be fixed and how. He is a hard man to reach because he is very busy, but it was worth the wait. Everything he pointed out made common sense and so I understood what needed to be done. Gordon is a blunt man, knows his stuff and does a lot of research if it happens to be something he does not know. Gordon's strength is that he is a perfectionist. He will never cut corners and you will get the best job done as a result. He treats your home as though it was his. He is not cheap, but it is well worth doing right the first time which will make it the last time. Although Gordon was hired to improve the circulation of the air in my attic there were so many other things that he found during his many months stay at my home. He spotted things that were really not his responsibility nor what he was retained to do. But he always has the homeowners best interest at heart and is always willing to repair other problems. Just as an example, when Gordon was in my attic he pointed out that some of my ceiling joists were cracking because of poor installation and improper materials used by my original contractor. He was more than happy to fix this for me. He saw that I had a dryer venting incorrectly and could potentially have caused a serious fire down the road, Did I hire him to do this? No, but he had no issue fixing what needed to be fixed. So he is a specialist in attics and roofs, but also understands and can spot other construction problems, or catch them before they become a real problem. The last thing I would say about Gordon is that he is always there to lend a helping hand. I had a basement flood during Gordon's stay. This was totally unrelated to the work Gordon was doing. I called him up late at night and asked for help. Within one hour Gordon was at my place sorting out the problem and finding the solution. By the morning he already had a crew of people show up to deal with this. He even ran to Home Depot for me that night to pick up 5 industrial blowers to get the moisture out of my basement. Very few people I know would ever step up to the plate for something like this.

What can I say as there are now words to describe such a heartfelt review as yours. I really appreciated your input, patience and understanding. Very few Homeowners understand what it takes to complete a project with a multitude of issues that need permanent fixes and the sequence in which they need to be done. Your belief in my experience made the job flow as good as could be expected especially when so many challenges had to be overcome safely. Thankfully HomeStars has brought us clients like you that do their research and recognize that there are a host of contractors to choose from. I feel blessed having been chosen by you from all the others you entertained, especially that you retained me on my first visit and we're willing to wait in line. See you in the Spring for the last phase and again thank you for your trust and confidence in me.

roof repair

We had a leak in our roof and there was a snow storm coming in the weekend. I've called like 15 roofing companies and 14 of them redirect you to automated services which they may or may not bother to call you. That was until I called up Gordon's company where he personally answers your call. What really shocked me was he was able to redirect some of his staff to check it out on the SAMEDAY! That was kind of crazy. He messaged me back and explained in detail the problems we had with the flat roof and able to repair in a very fast time frame as well as picture documentation of the repair to give you a sense of comfort on top of their word. Meeting him in person to pay him I found he's a extremely friendly guy and really has a way with kids when I had my son come with me. What's really funny after 4 days when everything was repaired I finally received 3 call backs after I called 15 roofing companies. Next roofing job and emergency I will probably have Gordon's number only.

Botched roof repair & eavestrough amazement

A competitor company did my roof. In doing so, they botched it. My top floor was leaking. They could not locate the problem.
Gordon Bailey & Academia Roofing to the rescue. Gord was able to locate the problem - a punctured ice shield. Academia promptly properly repaired and my top floor is leak proof.
Thankfully as I live in a historic Toronto Victorian home almost 150 years old. To be noted is that repairing these steep Victorian roofs is not an easy feat.
Gordon Bailey also made sure that the first company who botched the job was taken to task. He was my advocate which says something as I am a professional advocate.

This Fall, I noticed a drip drip from my eavestrough/roof line. Academia Roofing came to my rescue - realigning my eavestrough and adhering my roof shields securely down again, such that everything was drip proof and water tight.

I am very satisfied with Academia Roofing. 10 out of 10.

Roof Repair

My roof had just been through a big wind storm at the end of November as I was preparing to do some Christmas shopping albeit last minute. The winds were really howling as they reached upwards of 70-80 KM/Hour.

By the next morning, my neighbour informed me that some of my shingles had been blown off. As I could not see it myself since I leave for work really early in the morning and do not come home until late at night when it is already dark outside.

I took a day off from work two days later and saw a lot of shingles blown off and with the forecast calling for rain and snow coming up I did not wish to wait too long.

I called many companies the night before frantically and most of them were booked solid. I called Gordon Bailey after 8:30 pm and asked if he might do smaller jobs and I did advise him it was last minute. He not only took the call after 8:30 pm, he did tell me he could send a team out the next morning.

Then, later that evening, I received horrible news, my mother had just passed away a nd as you can imagine, I was not in the mood or frame of mind to deal with anything at that moment. I contacted Gordon to cancel the request, but he was sympathetic after hearing what had just happened, he still sent his guys to come do the job and gave me my time and space to deal with the pain. He had his team come by and repair the roof and was very flexible in allowing me to have some time before making payment. I did have some time to mysekf to grieve, but after about 2 weeks, I needed to make sure Mr. Bailey got his payment because I am an honest person. Mr. Bailey gave me a reasonable price even though he could have charged me more. It shows that there are some really good roofers out there who not only do the job, but have a heart too. When I finally met him in midtown to give him payment, he met me inside the subway station so that I would not need to exit and go back in the statio again, thus saving me from having to make payment two times for taking the subway. Thank You Gordon-Tony(Anthony) in Markham.

I am really at a loss for words Anthony and express my sincere heartfelt condolences to you for the sudden loss of your Mother. All I did was try to help you the only way I could as I knew you were not in any state to deal with anything, justifiably so. I knew it was calling for rain and snow and hoped this action would prevent further burden. My men conveyed to me your state when they arrived and I realized we were doing right for you. If ever in my life there will never be another emergency call more worthy than yours and you will always be in our thoughts. God Bless You.

roof repair

In the process of cleaning out my closet, I found evidence of roof leakage. I called Gord after dinnertime (after spending the day phoning other roofing companies) and he promised to send out a team the next morning at 8:30. Sure enough, Ryan and his partner arrived at 8:30 sharp, assessed the problem swiftly, and patched the roof. It was a painless process. Gord also offers incentives for repeat customers, so that's a plus. The fact that he was able to respond so quickly was impressive, his team was excellent and helpful, and they explained everything clearly. Moreover, I know it's a busy time of year for roofers, and I know they are fielding lots of calls, so it was great that were able to provide such excellent service on short notice (12 hours!). I will definitely be calling on them again!

Excellent and honest service. Gordon provided excellent, same-day response and service to repair damaged shingles. His team checked the whole roof and attic and repaired the roof. Was extremely impressed when Gordon contacted me the following day, to tell me he would be charging a lower price than originally quoted, and returned part of our payment, due to the fact that a harness was not needed. This was done completely proactively on his part. This type of honest business practice is admirable and says volumes about the company. We will definitely call Gordon again in the future when we need roofing service.

Thank you Laura and I hope you do not have anymore wind damage. I enjoy sleeping at night and refunding 500 dollars is a small price to pay for that.
