eavestrough

I have used the Gutter Doctor in the past and they were wonderful. This time I phoned because of a plugged downspout. A different serviceman came this time and he looked at the downspout and said it's plugged and said he would return to replace it and then cleaned the eaves which I told him I did not want cleaned. I live in a duplex and debris was blown into my neighbours eaves and some of the debris even ended up on their roof. Her son had to clean their eaves and roof the following day. The debris that was left on my deck and patio was also not cleaned up. He never did return to repair the clogged downspout which was why I had phoned them in the first place, just sent me a bill. The downspout which he said couldn't be unclogged was cleaned by my neighbour's son just using his hands and a hose.

Company Response

We understand your frustration, as it frustrates us too. It is unfortunate that the worker did not listen to you properly or clean up well. If you had called the office we would have quickly ensured that he go back and clean up properly and unplug that downspout.

Eavestrough cleaning / repairing

This summer we asked Gutter Dr. to check our gutters thoroughly to inform us if there were any problems with them and in the meantime, asked them to fix a few leaking corners and clean them if it was required. We were informed that no such repairs were needed for the corners we had spotted, instead they fixed some other spots which we do appreciate. However when he said he was done and got his cheque, I did double check with him if he went through all eavestroughs and gutters as he was expected to and he expressed my husband did not show him the other corner with the issues and he forgot to check one side of the house!!! While when at the first point, I called them to make an appointment, I had requested for a thorough investigation for any problems or issues. Anyhow, for some reason he rejected to fix it (the eavestrough was leaking and was kind of detached from the roof); he might have another appointment or so, and asked us to call their office to make another appointment.
The next day I called the lady to ask“1- a general question: if their guys are not supposed to check all the gutters/ eavestroughs when they come to the site (as customers expected)” and “2- simply to make another appointment with the same guy; and of course I was going to pay for that!!!”. Suddenly she raised her voice on me and said she would talk to the guy why he did not finish the job and would return my call!
Of course she didn’t and after a few hours I called her again to make another appointment with that guy to finish what he was supposed to do at the first point.
Again she raised her voice and said “You and your husband should have figured out what you wanted and…”!!! To me as a costumer who just called to make the clarification why the job was not done as it was promised to and to make another appointment, it was so insulting, rude, unprofessional and unethical! I interrupted her - as it was not acceptable to me to listen to her disrespectful tone- to ask “Mam, I have a question for you! Are your guys supposed to check all gutters or not!?” and again same unpleasant voice tone. In general very disappointing! Eventually she said she asked the guy to call us and talk to us!
Obviously the guy never called and of course even if he did, after that unprofessional attitude, we would have never continued our business with them. Couple of weeks later, we had a crew in our house to do some constructions and as the gutter above their head (the spot which had been inspected by Gutter Doctor’s guy and reported as ”a corner with no issue”) was leaking, they had difficulties to do the job. Anyhow thanks to the very professional crew who saw the problem- even before we mentioned it- , brought it up and repaired it as per our request.
I would not recommend Gutter Doctor at all to anyone and if any friends or neighbors ask me about them, would definitely hear negative feed backs from me.

What could this company do to improve their services?
Even if they are unable to provide an acceptable service to their costumers, the person who answers the phone calls should know, (s)he should treat costumers respectfully and professionally (under any circumstances).

Gutter Estimate & Cleaning

Last fall we asked Gutter Dr. to come look at our gutters as they were not draining, and we thought they needed to be re-sloped. We were informed that no such repairs were needed and only a cleaning was needed. Over the winter, water/ice leaked down into the soffits causing damage. When I called to speak to Lynn, she booked a follow up - Mind you it was March. I didn't hear anything. I called Lynn back who gave me my job number and encouraged me to call the Cell of the worker to inquire when the job was scheduled. I did this (left a voice mail) and have not hear back! Very poor service and follow up to problems that could have been avoided. Please do not use them!

Company Response

Sorry to hear this. Sometimes calls do get forgotten, especially when its up to the tech to keep track of it. We have since updated our processes to ensure customers requests are not missed.

Great Services

Gutter Doctor asked me for a reference on this site so here it is. I run a home maintenance service business for a few upper end clients who own several houses each and I subcontract some of the work for stuff that is beyond my scope of expertize. I have relied on Gutter Doctor for about 4 years. They really know their stuff and give me time to pay the bill. I only really ever had one issue over the last 4 years and it was fixed up fine after a phone call. It was just a mix up with the tenant telling Gutter Doctor what to do who shouldn’t have been. I think I will always use Gutter Doctor because they are good reasonable people who do good work at a good price. No complaints.

Fixed the loose fascia

Dear GutterDoctor
We are pleased with your company's service! We had trouble trying to get someone to fix the loose fascia on our house at a reasonable cost. It was way up high solute wind blew it loose in the summer times storms and it has been banging against the house in the wind ever since! We got quotes for up to $550 from companies that we didn't really trust after meeting them but your company wasn't only prompt and professional but was also the cheapest adjust $250. Definitely referring you around town.
Thank you so much

Reattaching gutter and fascia

From our experiences, Gutter Doctor is a terribly unprofessional company that does not understand customer service, at all.
In fact, the company initially denied knowing us and told Homestars we weren't their customers. When I produced emails and the paid invoice from Gutter Doctor, they suddenly remembered us - in great detail, as you can read on their response.

We had Jenner come to our house in April 2012; as per another review, we should have obtained a written estimate. He said he was going to replace the fascia and re-attach the gutter. After he told us that he completed the work in less than two hours, and with no new material used, he left an invoice for $450 plus tax. When we questioned the cost and why the work had not been completed as per our conversation, he told us that "I am expensive".
As I was dissatisfied by his response, I called the office again and asked to speak with the manager. I was told he was "out of town" and would return my call.
On December 22/12 I received a message from the manager James that he would take off our gutter and fascia or send us to collections if we didn't pay. When my wife returned the call, he stated that a follow up invoice was sent (we did not receive it and they could not provide us with a copy) and that I had apparently called him in October to refuse payment - completely false, as my wife and I were in Europe on our honeymoon at the time - December 22/12 was the first contact we received since I left the request for James to call in April - completely unacceptable!
We then again asked for a resolution to the discrepancy between what we were told the work would include and what actually occurred; James refused to come to our home to review the work stating, "I don't have time, I have a life."
He agreed to reduce the original invoice from $450 + GST to $300 + GST, and after I paid it, realizing that we would not get anywhere with this lack of customer service or respect, the updated invoice I received stated that the discount they offered us on the job was due to "bad debt!"
This company is full of excuses, but does not take any responsibility nor are they willing to attempt a "win-win" situation.
We have worked with many companies and trades over the past 12 years, as we own two 100 year old homes. We pay our bills and have never experienced this before.
A sign of a good company is one that is willing to fix their mistakes when they make them, not one that ignores its customers and then 8 months later threatens them.
I would not recommend this company to anybody.

Company Response

This is an unfair complaint and star-rating since the customer was provided exactly what they asked for at the price they agreed to in a timely manner. The work was properly done and it was a reasonable price for the dangerous tricky work. We stand by the quality of our work and are very careful to explain what the customer will be getting when the quotes are given. The customer even told us that the problem has been fixed to their satisfaction, they just don't like the process of how it got fixed! Their main concern was that the work was completed more quickly than they expected and they wanted a cheaper price because of it.

What really happened was as follows:
1) April 11 Jenner gave them a price to fix the problem (without new fascia since it was still in good condition, just coming loose) for $450 which they accepted and Jenner completed the job.
2) April 12 After the job was done they arbitrarily decided that a new fascia board should have been installed for the price since it took only 2 hours to complete the work and called the office to complain.
3) April 13 and 14 James, the manager, left two messages on the customer's phone the following two days after the complaint came in but he was never called back.
4) August 31 customer was mailed a 'past due' copy of the invoice
5) October 17 customer called the office and refused to pay for the job since new parts were not installed.
6) December 22 customer was called and a message left saying that we will undo the work we did if no payment is made or no call back received to discuss the payment.
7) Jan 1 Customer was called and a message left that we need to be either paid or called back and a reasonable price negotiated by January 3 otherwise it will be sent to a collection agency or alternatively the work undone.
7) January 3 Customer called the office and threatened to charge us with trespassing if we come on their property.
8) January 4 customer sent to collection agency
9) January 8 Customer called us and talked to manager demanding that he come look at the work to negotiate a price. Manager refused because the work was done to their satisfaction as they had already told us.
10) January 10 customer was called by the office and offered a $150 discount in hopes of receiving at least some of the money. The deal was refused at first, but then the customer called back and accepted the discounted price since they knew that they would need to pay the collection agency the full $450 to have it removed from their credit rating.
11) January 13 customer writes complaint on Homestars.

In the end the customer got the problem on their house fixed correctly at a price of less than they agreed to.

PIne needles, slant of gutters

We had a year's worth of spruce and pine needles blocking some of our downspouts and flooding in another section in every big rain. Jenner came, a friendly, pleasant worker, and operated with great skill and speed 2.5 floors up. He arrived at the front door again at one point to ask whether we would like him to trim back the offending branches that were hanging above the gutters. We also had him install shingles flashing around the whole house to ensure that water running down the shingles lands in the gutter and does not travel behind the gutter, where it could rot the wood. I was very pleased with Gutter Doctor sending someone out within a week, and with the quality of so much work. I'd recommend them to anyone.
