2nd floor hardwood installation
We wanted to replace the builder wall-to-wall berber carpet with hardwood on the second floor - about 1100 sf. Ideally we were hoping to accomplish this within a 7-8K budget but once we started shopping around for hardwood it became evident that it would be a challenge to keep the cost that low. Main floor and stairwell are already hardwood. Although we expected that we wouldn't be able perfectly match the main floor hardwood it was important to us that the transition from stairs to the newly installed 2nd floor be as natural as possible. We went shopping at different suppliers and the lowest cost for hardwood (red oak, 3/4" thick - width was unimportant either 2 1/4 or 3 1/2 was fine) was still running~ $5/sf.
We also needed to source an installer. Adam came recommended from a colleague at work so I reached out and he was able to come and discuss the job with us (we had quotes from other installers as well). The job had quite a few things to consider:
1) remove and dispose of carpet
2) move furniture
3) put on new trim (we weren't going to initially but opted to go with new stock prior to project start).
4) wood supply
Adam indicated a preference for Canadian sourced wood as the quality was better and more consistent than China made (based on his experience). He also had a supplier that would provide a good deal. This sounded appealing to us and his quote for labour was very reasonable considering the extras (carpet, furniture moving, etc). We booked him and prepared our house (lots of displaced sleeping for a few days).
The first day of the project we discovered that the wood that Adam was able to procure wasn't a close match to our existing floor. We never got together to colour match prior to the project which ended up being an issue as now we had no wood and a second floor all prepped to go. A was fortunate enough to be able to find a supplier with who was able to provide the required material within 3 days although the cost ended up being higher than what we had budgeted with Adam (goes to prove the rule about the cost of renovation - leave some budget for the unexpected). Adam was able to re-schedule other jobs in order to accommodate this delay and went to extra efforts to ensure that the project completed as quickly as possible.
In the end my wife and I are very satisfied with the job Adam did. The floor looks great. Even though we went over budget due to material issues Adam went the extra distance to try and provide whatever extra efforts were needed to get the job done. I would not hesitate to recommend Adam and his team.
