Bathroom Reconstruction

We hired Eyecon Developments to rebuild our bathroom. It was a terrible experience. When we signed the contract with them in mid-Dec. 2019, they promised that the work would be completed by early Jan. 2020.

The understanding was that Eyecon was hiring professional tradesmen to do the work. Eyecon Developments pushed for, and received a large amount of their fee (90%) when the job started and early in the project, even though I protested that that was too much money.

Early in the job, Eyecon informed me, that instead of hiring professional tradesmen, they would be doing the work themselves under the guidance of an elderly family member.

The work was not completed by early January. Eyecon then informed me that they were only available to work on our bathroom on weekends.

Weeks went by. When they didn’t arrive, I again requested that Eyecon Developments hire competent professionals and get the job done a.s.a.p. Eyecon Developments insisted that they had to do the work themselves.

They would show up once every 3 weeks or so, usually Sundays at 2 or 3 p.m. and do a couple of hours work and then not show up again for another 3 weeks. Sometimes they would not show up at all even though they promised they would arrive.

I requested over and over that they get on the job site and finish the work on our bathroom.

This went on through January, February and March 2020. Finally because of the Covid Pandemic, I had to suspend work on our bathroom for two months (April and May). In June I allowed them to come back but the same problems persisted.

Finally on September 1, 2020 I had to fire Eyecon Developments for not completing the work promptly and performing construction work that was unsatisfactory.

We hired another contractor. Working with the new contractor we discovered:
That the floor tiling Eyecon Developments did was poorly and unevenly laid with splotches of cement, instead of an even undercoating, resulting in one tile cracking at Christmas and several others coming loose over the ensuing months. Some tiles were in danger of cracking if weight was placed upon them. In addition, the cement under certain tiles was still wet months later, as grout had been applied without letting the cement underneath dry first. The grout was uneven and very poorly applied as can be seen in the photos attached. The entire floor had to be removed.
When the grouting was done Eyecon Developments did not return to clean up the excess grout, meaning that we had to spend 10 hours cleaning up the excess grout that should have cleaned up within 48 hours of the grouting.
The worst problem was the shower/bath system. Eyecon Developments misconnected the hot and cold water feeds, so the temperature control would not work. They also erroneously connected the rain showerhead to the centre output ring on the rough in, so that when the water was turned on to the system, the rain shower could not be turned off. This output ring is meant for the hand held shower attachment with a remote shut off. Then they dry walled the area and placed tiles on it. We had to diagnosis the problem and remove tiles to re-plumb the shower/bath system and refinish the area.
Eyecon Developments was given money to purchase the shower system. I am still waiting for a receipt/warranty for the shower system. I also requested the name of the company where the shower system was purchased and have received no reply. The correct tub faucet was not delivered, resulting in me having to purchase the proper tub faucet separately at my own expense.

Eyecon Developments also did not remove the construction debris. I finally had to pay to have another company remove the debris.

I have requested a reimbursement of funds from Eyecon Developments for poorly done work, for the cost of removing the debris and the tub faucet, and for work that was not completed. I am still waiting for a response to my request over one month later.

Our new contractor was able to complete the work; by first repairing some of the work Eyecon Developments had done, (see bottom photo) greatly adding to the costs of the project.

I do not recommend Eyecon Developments.
