PS: $37000 was not the entirety of the project. We discontinued the service with this company as if we were to continue, we would've been overbudget.
Details:
- Does not provide a complete line by line written estimate for the entire renovation.
- Suggested to not sign a contract
- prices are through the roof as verified by a licensed architect
- he indicated that there would be an increase of cost (after he started the work) because we applied for a building permit and therefore he needed to hire certified plumbers and electricians. The certified plumbers and electricians that he recommended were also on the more expensive end.
- only admitted that he was inexperienced for renovations that require permits after a large portion of the budget was already spent
- extremely disorganized: does not review drawings provided to him and asked us to resend the emails multiple times, only provided partial written quotation, the rest was verbal or provided as an invoice after the work was done.
- inexperienced in reviewing drawings, does not understand how to read drawings
- took photos of our interior property and posted on social media without owner consent
- We voiced our concerns to Paul regarding the budget that was spent and the future costs to complete the work. We indicated that we got a written quotation from another contractor and Paul asked to see it so he can provide a competitive price. He took the written quotation and said he would get back to us on the evening of the same day but never took the initiative to contact us. After a few follow up phone calls and text messages, Paul finally responded and said he had a new project to work on and will no longer finish our renovation.
- We prepaid for the entirety of the powder room in the beginning of the project (includes installation of toilet, vanity, painting, etc.). As he did not complete this work in the end, we had requested for a partial refund but he refused our request without a reasonable explanation.
- Paul painted rooms, doors and window frames at the beginning of the project without accounting for future construction of flooring and how that may damage the paint.
- entered our home without consent - After Paul was no longer our contactor, he gave us a date on when he would go to our house to pick up his equipment. I sent him a message to confirm the date and reminded him to not enter our property without our consent. However, I was told by him that he had already gone to our house and picked up everything.
- Demolition: Paul requested for the structural engineer to confirm if one of the walls is load bearing wall as he was not comfortable with removing it. Prior to receiving the confirmation from the structural engineer, Paul went ahead and demolished the wall without further direction.
- Overall experience: We feel that Paul was not the right contractor for this scope of work. He seemed to lack experiences in renovating houses that require building permits.
- Approximate cost of services:
- $37,000.00
