Currently faced with a $450 cancellation fee to cancel an assumed hot water tank rental (signed up for by the previous home-owner) which is over 7 years old. When I asked the term of the lease I was informed that it is indefinite, so no end date (how is that even legal?).
I then requested to see the original contract (signed by the previous home-owner), which they sent me the digitized version of, however, they are unable to provide me with terms and conditions associated with that contract as they were on the back of the contract and this was never digitized. They sent me some other terms and conditions, and told me these are the one appropriate to my contract, however, I am expected to just take their word for it since they do not have the original document. Interestingly, at first they did say it was the back of my contract, until I pointed out the serial number of the contact on the front did not match the one on the back (meaning it was from someone elses contract)
I wouldn't mind, but one of the reasons for me wanting out and installing a tankless is because of the illegal and dangerous install of the current tank (no mixer and venting incorrectly).
This whole situation is frustrating as it feels like I am held to ransom. Basically I pay the outrageous cancellation fee, or they will keep billing indefinitely.
I also want to point out, I did arrange for them to come quote on the new tankless system install, however, they stood me up twice with not even a phone call.
There are reputable water companies out there. Unfortunately this is not one of them.
