This is the worst service experience I have ever had in my life. The work on my roof wasn't undertaken until over 4 months later than promised. Furthermore, it was a botched job from beginning to end. My house is a small Victorian row house in Cabbagetown. Since it is attached on both sides, it is a situation that requires some finesse. I had heard that M and R Roofing had done a lot of work in Cabbagetown and figured they would be used to this kind of situation. Wrong. The workers they sent over threw pieces of the roof indiscriminately to the untarped, unprotected ground, destroying my garden (even though my tenant kept protesting and sending me pictures). The clean up was so sloppy (including a skylight being reinstalled crookedly), that the crew had to be ordered back. In addition to butchering my garden, a portion of the roof hit my porch and broke a brick off the brick siding/wall that encloses it. Worse still, they hit and broke the gas meter, which resulted in Enbridge tagging the gasline and the water heater (meaning they would be shut off in a month if something wasn't done). This was not only costly, but required endless negotiations with Enbridge as well as an outside heating expert. (When Enbridge did fix the meter, for some reason this required digging up my front yard again for good measure). When I received the bill from M and R, it was months later. At first I thought they were ashamed about what happened, but it turns out that there is really something very wrong in their accounting department. I suggested that, in view of the overall debacle, I should only pay the price of the estimate and not the $2000 add on. I emailed several times about this, but didn't hear back for over a month, at which point the owner called me. He shouted and spouted obscenities. He, of course, would admit to no wrong doing. So they sent a collection agency after me for the $2000. I am ashamed to say that I caved and have finally sent in a check. Needless to say I received no compensation or apology for the damage caused. M and R Roofing seems to be highly thought of in Cabbagetown. I hope this review changes some minds and saves unsuspecting homeowners a lot of grief.

Company Response

Dyan, the excessive language, hyperbole, bending of truths and baseless extreme zero ranking that your malicious rant not review includes is irresponsible, uncivil and qualifies as libel according to the legal counsel we have consulted. We will be taking legal action. It is defamation to, on a public forum compare a company and it's employee to a fictional character from a television drama series based on a mobster that operates an organized crime ring involved in extortion and other crimes. In no way does M&R Roofing or it's employees resemble the dealings of Tony Soprano. These are severe statements of libel based in emotional malicious intentions resulting in false accusations and suggestions affecting the reputation of the company. Your lack of judgement here shows your pettiness, recklessness and proves many things including the difficulty our staff had managing this account. It is absurd that you leave a 0 review peppered with name calling after you received all work installed as per contract with no inherent roofing problems.

Now I will address your other remarks. Just a disclaimer, that is fact that you were not present in the country during any of these occurrences you claim so, your understanding of the truth may be limited.

First, the work was completed in mid March and was delayed by the 4 months you claim due to the harsh winter of 2015 and by you confirming your work too late at the end of the 2014 season. The job was not "botched" which is another example of your irresponsible hyperbole. I offered to have the membrane manufacturer representative inspect and assess the work to stop you from making false statements, an offer you have not undertaken so, that you can continue to make false statements about the workmanship quality with which there is no issue. Our employees are not "louts", they are however manufacturer certified installers at the highest designation from that manufacturer.

We have successfully completed many projects on your street and for your neighbours many of whom we call friends or acquaintances so, we are very familiar with the access issues. Your property features a 18' wide property with trees, a small walkway and steps. The entire flat roof from above your total home square footage had to be carried over the roof an disposed of in this limited area. Protection plywoods and tarps were set up to create a drop zone of about 4' to dispose 100 years of roofing layers being hauled to a nearby bin. Photos of this set-up exist.

Photos also exist of the spalling, cracking and missing bricks all over the front facade of your home and that brick siding wall you mention on which you claim one brick broke off. Please inspect the rest of your facade which is losing bricks each winter from the phenomena called "spalling brick". This project was done in mid March after a severe winter. I saw other loose bricks around your property yet, you rant about this one brick being cause by us.

We reused your existing skylight which a previous installer installed using caulking which we had to painfully scrape off to save it for you and make it sit flush on the curb. Your tenant was not home when we installed it which makes it is difficult to see from the top small alignment issues. When she mentioned it a week later after staring at it for days, it was adjusted with her standing below and approving the alignment. We handled that appropriately.

The hot water meter has nothing to do with our work nor is it our responsibility. If Enbridge told you that it was facing the wrong way then you should have that addressed because clearly they have a reason for it to be facing the right way and perhaps that is a safety issue that you should comply with for your own benefit. The meter was old and during the work one of the employees may have been walking with material in this limited area and nudged it without even noticing. Accidents can happen. The nudge resulted in a crack. It was handled by Endbridge and TSSA being contacted by us to replace the meter. It was just bad luck and we have received a bill from both Enbridge and the TSSA totaling $3,229.93. We dealt with it. We paid our bills. That will was not your responsibility. You had to comply with the Enbridge request about the hot water meter because that is your responsibility and that charge was $226.00 which you emailed me about. We handled our responsibility.

In regards to the landscaping, the project was done in the winter, Mid March when the landscaping was dead and ground hard and dry. I do not believe that there was any additional planting and re-planting that needed to happen this spring that was not part of the general spring planting anyways. You were just seeking to get something out of us. You claimed to have incurred planting costs. Our controller asked for invoices which you never provided. Photographs are available of your lawn from the fall 2014 roof inspection, winter 2015 during production and after the project to prove there are no damages.

The additional $2000.00 you were charged was for additional carpentry work necessary to replace the rotted deck and level the substrate to install the roofing system to meet manufacturer warranty requirements. The charges were based on square footage and costs stipulated in our standard term and conditions should such necessary work arrive. You refused to pay for this and threatened many times to leave public reviews to blackmail us to discount this additional work. We did the work and expect to be paid for it. When you didn't pay after numerous requests from our controller at whom you yelled with your self-entitled threats and flowery choice of words she passed the account to collections. If you believe this amount was not owed then you would not have paid it. The collections agency did their due diligence and discussed it many times with you and based on the facts acknowledged this was a true balance owing and certainly no mob style extortion. Photos were sent to you showing both the rotted area and the newly replaced carpentry. You didn't dispute the work done. You just wanted it for free which you acknowledge in this rant. You wanted a $2000.00 discount by attempting to blackmail and threaten but, didn't get your way.

Photos and other documents are available as a record to dispute your claims and bending of truths. I wish Homestars allowed for photos to be published in responses so, that prospective clients can witness the truth and future contractors can be warned.

We are fully aware that clients can review us on forums. It is M&R Roofing that encourages clients review us on Homestars and has a paid monthly account however, baseless malicious rants intent on affecting our company reputation based on bending of truth, name calling and unfounded comparisons because we did not discount $2,000.00 dollars of work that we did, will not be tolerated even from our clients. Not only has this rant generated reputation damages for the company in the two months it has been posted but, it has also resulted in a personal smear against a company employee causing personal reputation damages which is well documented. We will be taking legal actions against this libel and contacting Homestars for allowing such drivel to be posted without proper editorial review which they claim occurs. Certainly, it discredits their processes and this platform. Clients should come on Homestars to read honest reviews whether positive or negative but, not illegal libel. Please note that a slander lawsuit may succeed without even proving a financial loss or without permanent record of the slander however, in this case both a permanent records and documentation of lost revenues exist, the law will presume damages, as if it were libel, if someone makes negative remarks about you in your work, profession, trade, or business. We will pursue our rights and justice tirelessly and defend the proper purpose and usage of a forum like Homestars.
