Gas fireplace Tune-up

I utilized Gasfix to do cleaning and tune-up of my gas fireplace. Scott called to advise he was on his way, with attendance at my home in approximately 20 minutes -- and arrived promptly. He was pleasant, professional and extremely thorough. He answered my questions without hesitation. He completed his work and left my house spotless. Scott was a pleasure to deal with and I highly recommend Gasfix.

Gas Fireplace

I haven't used my fireplace since we moved in 4 years ago. As luck would have it I didn't want to use it until I cleaned the glass. When I went to do that I realized there was something really wrong with the unit. It was faulty beyond. Gasfix was recommended and I called them right away. They called back immediately. Dwayne came out and spent a good amount of time analyzing it. The liner was melted, valves were missing, it was a mess. He tested to ensure we were safe and gave us a quote for the repair. After almost 2 years we finally called them back to make the repairs and they were loyal to their original quote...2 years later! We also decided to paint out the brass frame black and now its like a brand new unit. I couldn't be more pleased! And Dwayne and Farhan were quiet, respectful and left the place immaculate as if no one had been there. Quite impressed and so happy with the work!

Thank you for your review and for calling Gas Fix back to repair your Instaflame fireplace. Typically, our quotes are good for 10 days but we will work with our customers to give them the best price that we can. As noted, your unit did require extensive repairs. We replaced the melted liner with a new one and also replaced the valve and the pilot assembly. It's surprising how quality service can make an old unit look brand new again. Our technicians can also service pool heaters, water heaters and furnaces so if you have any issues in the future, please do not hesitate to contact us. ~ Jason ~

Repair & Replace

I originally called Gasfix to repair a faulty pool heater. Scott arrived on time, solved the issue and explained the problem with the heater. I already knew that said heater was on it's last legs as it was 21 yrs old. So when it it really didn't operate at 100% a week later I decided to replace it. I called Gasfix for a quote and they replied right away. Scott returned and gave me a detailed explanation of what was required with both product and labour. I was happy with the quote as I had done research ahead of his visit. A mutually time for installation was agreed to and the contract was signed. On the appointed installation day, Dwayne and his associate arrived on time, introduced themselves and explained what the procedure would be. They replaced the old unit with their product, explained product usage, warranty info and then cleaned up. The whole process was fast, easy and worry free. I recommend this company and will use them again if I need their services.

Pool Heater repair

We have an older millivolt (natural gas) pool heater that has been problematic for a couple years. A year ago we brought in a technician recommended through the pool supply company. He didn't really know what he was doing and spent more time reading the manual then doing any work. He got it working enough to get us through the season. But this year, we had similar problems, with sporadic function, till it stopped working altogether. Called Gas Fix and they came in (on a long-weekend). And not only did they know how to service pool heater (without a manual), but did a thorough inspection, cleaned up the aging wiring, and in no time diagnosed the problem. Unlike other service technicians they didn't need to leave (for several hours) to get parts, having everything required on-site and made sure the pool heater was working 100% just as it should. No issues since. We have now gone from thinking about a full equipment replacement, to probably getting a few more years out the heater. Very accommodating in explaining not only the work being done, but any questions I had. Knowledge and skill level was excellent; their experience showed. The price is reasonable (factoring in time, materials, effort), I will gladly pay for topnotch quality service every time.

Pool Heater Lighting

I struggled with submitting this incident, I have had good service for the last five years but this very much raised a flag. After doing the initial start up and service our heater required replacing and it was completed last June. To start the year this year I called and asked for a service call to light and my concern was the warranty. It could not be done for a couple of days which I accepted ,but the total charges reflected a basic serve charge of $94.00, 25 minutes of service time $40.00, and $17.42 for taxes. The tech was great and kept reassuring me the process was easy. Moving forward based on this charge I will have difficulty using this service or recommending based on their position on pricing what I considered to be a minimal task

Thank you for your review, Dan. We have been servicing your pool heater over six years when we started servicing your Hayward CZ200C-EI in 2010. Our rates have not changed very much over the years. When you look at only the service fee to dispatch our technician combined with the labour fee, our rates are still in line with what you paid in the past. In 2012, the service fee and labour was $125. In 2013, the service fee and labour was $248 as there were repairs to the unit. In 2014, the service fee and labour was $161. In May 2015, the service fee and labour was $141. On July 4, 2015, the unit would spark but would no longer ignite so we quoted on as new unit. The service fee and labour for the service call on July 4th was $213. Three days later, we replaced the Hayward unit with a new Raypak unit. We also credited you back $93 for the service fee from July 4th as goodwill. Essentially, that call on July 4th was $120 for the labour only. In June 2016, the service fee and labour was $134. Please note that our rates do not include HST.
We are different from other gas contractors that we take safety very seriously. Many contractors will light the pilot and leave it at that. We don’t. We light the pilot, check the operation of the pressure switch, check the ON/OFF safety circuit and check for spiders in the burner orifices. Most pool heater service calls are between 20 to 25 minutes. This falls completely in line with our past service calls, except for those service calls when we had to do a more substantial repair to an older Hayward unit. It is also important to note that when we have had to service your Hayward pool heater, we always had the parts on our vehicle to complete the repair.
Another concern you mentioned was warranty. Raypak is very clear on warranty. If the issue is an installation error, chemistry issue, a maintenance/service issue or an issue that is not related to the pool heater, the customer pays. This was merely a light and check to your unit exactly as we have done in the past for the prior Hayward unit. We did email Raypak who confirmed that the light and check to your pool heater is not a warranty situation as there was no part failure or additional issue with your heater.
You said our technician was great and we think that warrants a 10 for the service that we provided not only this year but also in the past. ~ Jason

Pool heater installation

I needed a new pool heater and the associated extension to my gas line. They had more selection and better prices on heaters than the local pool store. Scott & his team arrived when they said they would, did great work, and cleaned up after themselves better than many other trades-workers I've used over the years.

Thank you Chris for your review and choosing Gas Fix to supply and install your Hayward pool heater. As we provide warranty services for two of the manufacturers, Hayward included, our technicians have that know-how to ensure a product is installed properly to code and to manufacturer's specifications. As noted, we upgraded the gas line and installed the unit to code providing components that many other contractors don't provide. Two important parts to an install is the check valve and the bonding wire. The check valve prevents chemicalized water from going back into the pool heater. The bonding essentially grounds any of the metal components in the pool system. If you ever have any issues with your pool heater, please do not hesitate to contact us. ~ Jason ~

Display board for pool heater

The cost for the same part in Amazon was $320 and when asked why was so expensive and told because they have it on the truck and that is only good business
Don't mind a mark-up but this is to high. I find this gouging and greed and not good business as opposed to their thinking.
This is just one issue what are they like in other repair scenarios........

Approximate cost of services:
$550.00

Company Response

We appreciate your review regarding the service call to your Jandy pool heater. You indicate that the cost of service was $550 but the signed invoice indicates you paid $150 plus HST. However, let’s investigate the facts.

You have a Jandy LJ250 pool heater that was manufactured between 2003 & 2009. The serial number of your unit is H05PK0912 which indicates your unit was manufactured in 2005. Your pool heater is 10 years or older.

As we specialize in the repair & maintenance of pool heaters & fireplaces, our technicians carry over 300 of the most common parts on their vehicle for pool heaters & fireplaces, are TSSA licensed, & are factory trained technicians. You are getting an expertise that most contractors cannot match. Also, we provide warranty services for two of the major pool heater manufacturers.

The $550 you reference is the approximate cost of the part that is required to fix your pool heater. This is an electronic circuit board which are expensive to replace when they fail. Our technicians carry this part on their vehicle as it is good for business to be able to accommodate our customers on the same day without multiple return calls. We were able to show you that this was the part required to fix your unit but you only wanted to pay the price you found on Amazon. Without our diagnostics, you would not know what would be required to repair your unit.

Gas Fix is a small local company & we cannot buy in the volume of a large internet company like Amazon to get the best price. What we offer is quick service & a reasonable price. If after we have done a diagnosis, a customer decided they wanted to buy the part on the internet, they will have to pay for the part, plus shipping & handling, possible exchange rates, & then another service call to have a technician to return to install the part. So the money you saved is now almost nothing & you have had to wait two or three days to get the part & the how many more days to get the technician back to install it. How much is getting your pool usable worth to you? So there is little real value in buying this type of product on the internet.

On a Friday afternoon of the weekend of a big party, customers do not want to hear that the part has to be ordered in & will come in on Tuesday, for example. They need the part now & that is what we, Gas Fix, work very hard to do for our customers. To do that, Gas Fix spends 10,000’s of dollars, per vehicle, to be sure we have the parts we need to fix most heaters on the spot & get the pool heater up & running right away.

Our markup is in a normal to low range as most businesses operate. On this part, the margin is 40%. When you see so many ads with discounts of 50% to 75% off you can be sure that their cost is even lower than the sale price. So those same companies have a margin of 75% to 80% well above our normal margins. In this circumstance, the list price (suggested retail price) for this part is $526.74. We don’t see how that is gouging the customer.

Purchases through Amazon have a 30 day return policy when it’s unopened & returned in it’s original packaging. We have a better policy. Our labour warranty is 30 days & our parts warranty is 90 days. That means if the part failed within 90 days due to a defect, there would be no charge to replace that part.

At Gas Fix, we strive to provide quality service & care to all our clients. Superior quality does come with a price; however, it is not possible to provide quality service at a discount price. ~ Gas Fix

Thank you Debbie for your review! As we get closer to the opening of the pool heater season, we have technicians that go the extra mile to make sure that we take care of our customers such as Scott did on Friday, May 20. All your Hayward heater required was a little TLC as the unit is getting older. Scott was able to get the unit going again by cleaning the flame sensor, blowing out the burners with compressed air and vacuuming the heat exchanger. When it does come time to replace your Hayward pool heater, we hope that you consider Gas Fix. If there is anything that we can do for you in the future, whether for a fireplace, furnace or water heater, please do not hesitate to contact us. ~ Jason ~
