Bathroom Renovation

Just bought a condo and Bathroom needed reno because of mold building up and tile coming off. I have a 3 yo son that I cannot bathe in that room (has some allergies and coughing regularly).I gave Stan a$1,000 cheque as advance: he disappeared after cashing it through... Money Mart. His Phone number is no longer assigned. Lost my money !!! I believe he is not a trustable business person.

Bathroom Tiling, Stand-up Shower

Hello,

As noted by other reviewers, Stan Gordon was unreliable. We were confident he would do a good job but he would not show up when he said he would. He kept making excuses. He would not return phone calls until weeks later. He said the job was a quick one and he would take few days.

We payed him deposit in December 2008. And its now June 2009 and he has not completed it!
we even had to hire a new plumber to re-wire the plumbing (he made a mistake). He kept increasing the cost of materials - it ended up being about 50% more then he originally quoted!

When he needed money, he would always be there when he said he would. At this point, we haven't heard from him for 1 month since we paid an additional $500. He has grouting and tiling a wall in the showers left.

I'm really shocked because I found him on Holmes on Holmes. If anyone has a contact to Holmes on Holmes to file a complaint - please post here! (there is only a feed form to fill out)

But again, I really advise NOT hiring Stan Gordon - and if you do - make really firm start and finish dates and don't pay so much money upfront.

Tile basement floor

I hired Stan to tile my basement floor. I knew he did good work, and I'm satisfied with the final result. However, Stan was very unreliable. He didn't show up when he said he would. It would take him a week or more to return my calls. In November, he stated he would finish the job before Christmas. In the end, he finished in February. I think he is quality conscious, but not very service minded. I wouldn't recommend him because he was very unreliable.

small bathroom reno

We were looking for a tile guy to replace/install tile on our bathroom floor and tub surround. We hired Stan because of his affiliation with Holmes on Homes...big mistake!

Mr. Gordon was unreliable (showed up late, showed up for only a couple of hours at a time, or didn't show up at all) and the job took a week, when he said it would only take 2-3 days. We only have one bathroom, so this was extremely inconvenient! He was only pleasant and chatty during the initial consultation and when asking for the deposit and final cheque. The completed job (which was done mostly by his helper, whom he didn't even introduce us to) was extremely shoddy and needed major touch-ups - the ceiling and walls were gouged, marked up and had grout smeared all over. Closer inspection shows the tiles were laid unevenely. The grout has cracked in several places in the tub surround and mold is already starting to appear. To top it all off, we had to hire a plumber to fix an "adjustment" Mr. Gordon and his helper made to the pipes and faucet and, of course, claimed wasn't their fault.

Mr. Gordon advised us several times that he would be back after the job to do touch-ups. His contract states a guarantee, so against our better judgement, we handed over the final cheque. We've never heard from him again, despite leaving several messages at his business number over the past five months. We have since filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau.

Obviously, Mr. Gordon only cares about big jobs that appear on TV.

Re-tile master bathroom

The re-tiling of my master bathroom was the last step in fixing my problem. As I had mentioned in my Comment regarding EXPRESSROOTER company, the owner (Martin) has personally took the time to speak to one of Mike Holmes on Homes official tilers. Stan Gordon came highly recommended. Getting a hold of Stan was a bit of a challenge at first since he seems to be extremely busy... Mike Holmes has always said, "if a contractor (i.e. plumber, tiler, etc) indicates that they can start right away, most cases they are not professional. Professionals are always busy"... Anyway, when I finally got Stan to come and reassess my tile situation, he was very informative. He had clearly indicated what needs to be done and what can wait so that it's not heavy on my pockets. His price is slightly higher than what I was hoping for but I have seen his work in some of Holmes on Homes episodes. The results was worth it! Stan indicated that the work can be completed in 2 to 3 days. The work was completed on the 5th day from when he had started only because he was unable to show up on the 3rd day. On the day of our 1st meeting, he did showed up at least an hour late... he had call to tell me he was running late... I later found out that he was in a car accident and still showed up for our meeting driving the damaged truck. The following days after that initial meeting, he had been coming later and later but with the courtesy of calling to inform me of the lateness which I didn't mind since his lateness has worked in my advantaged. The last couple of days of work, he had deliberately been late to ensure that my 2 kids (3yrs old girl and 8th mth boy) gets their morning nap without me asking. At one occassion, he was outside waiting until he has seen some sign that my kids were up and about... the sign being me opening the screen door... this was not arranged. Throughout the whole time, Stan has been a pleasure to deal with and very thoughtful of my kids and their routine that I didn't realize until the end that he had been working around our schedule without so much a word / complaint. I highly recommend Stan for your tiling work if you want to get it done RIGHT... however, patience and understanding on your part is a must since Professionals (like Stan) are very busy (in high demands) that you will definitely ran into some lateness / delays. By the end of his job with us, he is already scheduled to work on my neighbour. He is definitely coming back to do other tile work around our house!

Bathroom tiling, front foyer tiling

I hired Stan because he had done work on a major renovation show on TV and I thought I was assured of a quality job by someone who would "make it right". Stan gave me the impression he would be doing the work himself, but handed most of it over to someone else. At signing, Stan indicated the job would take about 2 weeks. The job took 5 weeks (with working everyday but 2 during that time). The job entailed removing the old tile, replace the cement board in the shower stall, removing one step in front of the tub, installing a waterproof membrane in the shower stall and retiling, as well as removing marble tile in the foyer and retiling. Stan and his worker were argumentative about most aspects of the job right from the beginning, including the choice of grout, tile pattern, size of tiles etc (and it was all basic ceramic tiles - no saw required).
The spacing between the tiles was larger than I requested (and larger than the manufacturer recommended)and the grouting in the shower stall was so poorly done that most of it had to be scraped out the next day and redone. There was always an excuse for everything (I was told the grouting was bad because of either poor grout quality or high humidity, but the same grout was used the next day by someone else and it was fine! There was no finishing off details (no siliconing around the granite or caulking at all)and no thresholds where tile met other surfaces. In past jobs , my other tilers have always done this as part of the overall job. An inadequate space was left between my hardwood and the tiled foyer, so when we went to install the wood threshold, it would not fit. (We had supplied a sample to Stan to know how it should have been done) After 3 calls to Stan to come and fix it,but no show, we finally just paid someone else to do it. The overall look of the job is adequate, but certainly for the high price I paid (labour only came to $7,450), I feel I got a mediocre job and had to put up with a lot of moaning and groaning.
