Penguin Basements

My wife and I decided to finish our basement and we had three companies that came to our home and provided quotes. One of the reasons we chose Penguin Basements was their product that is much better than drywall. It comes in a modular wall system, mold resistant and 100% recyclable, green product. We were also happy with their quote, where everything was laid out in detail and there were no hidden fees afterwards. Their staff, especially Guy, was very knowledgeable and helped us with choosing the best options to suit our layout right from the quoting stage.
They were very open with the materials they used and I was able to pick and choose the fixtures, laminate, tiles and paint color that best fit our budget. The crew that worked on our basement was very attentive to detail, hard workers and many days they would come around 9 in the morning and leave at 9 in the evening.
The whole job lasted eight weeks (two more than initially quoted), but I did not mind the extra two weeks because I was in no rush and wanted the job done right. The owner of the company dropped by every two weeks or so to see the progress and to answer any questions or concerns I may have.
All electrical work was done by a licensed electrician and his work inspected by the Electrical Safety Authority and a certificate was provided. Also, the plumbing, flooring was done by different crew members with experience in that particular area. This is not a "one guy does everything" operation, and one other thing that I liked is the fact that they would not move on to the next stage until I was happy with the completion of the current stage and had all my questions answered (i.e. framing, plumbing, flooring, walls, ceiling etc).
Once the job was done, I had a list of several items I wanted resolved that I sent to Guy in the front office. The following day the crew was back at my house and spent the next two days fixing everything on my list to my satisfaction. I was also given a 100% lifetime warranty certificate and that put me at ease, knowing they fully stand behind their workmanship.
Overall, we are very happy with the new basement and would have no problem hiring Penguin Basements again or recommending them to our friends and family.

I understand that these types of reviews are written by the companies themselves or the companies competitors bad mouthing their competition but my dealing with Penguin is an actual fact. My wife and I chose Penguin because after seeing You Tube videos on putting drywall in a basement,it no longer made sense or an option..We also chose them as they seem to have a good reputation anywhere on the internet.One of our good friends child years ago incurred asthma and they found out mold was the major contributing factor and after seeing government (CMHC) studies on how drywall attracts mold,doing as much research on this including why our honest home builder
told us he's not allowed to build our basement by law until the gov.warranty expires,our home insurance does not cover mold,so,no thanks,there was no question as to what my wife and I had to do.We decided to go ahead with Penguin because they taught us things we had no idea about even though it cost us more than drywall but in the long run,our basement only has to be finished once in a lifetime and our health is the most important to us. Hope our experience encourages others to do the same research as we did and make an educated decision.Like my wife said,it's not always about the money if the job is done right the 1st time. Arthur and I have been putting off our basement for a couple of years when we saw four job signs in the area for completed basements. We wanted to get design ideas so we called Penguin and they sent out a design consultant. Trevor spent a lot of time with us, understanding our needs, including an office a kitchen and a walk out. We received a digital drawing and he invited us to check out a couple of the finished jobs he sold himself.

That saturday we visited two neighbours houses and I was really impressed. To ensure that I was getting good value, Arthur wanted to get two more quotes and research Penguin's finishing material online. Penguin's quote was about $1,000 and $2,500 more than my other two quotes but the material the used was far better. From the walls, to the floor and even the electrical (Smart Home Electrical) we were confident that Penguin would do a good job.

The entire basement took about three weeks and we were very impressed. Every other day we had a manager make contact or visit the job site to ensure our satisfaction. It took a while for me to pick the tile, but George was very accessible and took the time to show me countless samples.

I'd like to thank everyone at Penguin Basements for their outstanding service, I wish I had another basement to renovate. :)
