Granite countertops for kitchen, marble countertops for three bathrooms

We are unhappy with the installation job done by this firm, largely because they damaged an appliance and refused to take any responsibility.

Their attitude toward us has been consistently belligerent, blaming people who weren't even present in the kitchen for the damage to the appliance, and accusing us of banging on our granite to cause chips in it. I will only deal with J & J (also known as JMJ) through our kitchen designer because I refuse to be yelled at again.

As it turns out, Antique Brown granite is prone to chipping - a fact that neither J & J or the granite supplier saw fit to mention while we were choosing it.

However, in fairness, I must say that J & J has made good on repairing the many chips that have appeared over the eight months since installation. They have twice sent out a very pleasant young man who does a terrific job. He's hard to understand, but very conscientious.

This firm, which also goes by the name JmJ Marble & Granite, was so incompetent and so horrible to deal with that I wouldn't recommend them to my worst enemy.

They put a dent in my cooktop while installing it into the granite and refused to take responsibility. It cost us $800 to replace the part.

A couple of months after installation, chips started appearing at the edge of the granite, and when I called J&J, the woman screamed at me that it was all my fault, that I had BANGED it. I hadn't, of course, and in any event, granite is normally harder than almost anything else in the kitchen. If a glass or piece of china falls on the countertop, the glass or china breaks, not the granite. The granite countertop in our previous kitchen did not have any chips or cracks after years of normal use.

Eventually our kitchen designer intervened, and J&J sent someone to repair the chips. It took very little time, and he did a good job, so I was left wondering why the woman who screamed at me on the phone made such a fuss.

Now, more chips are appearing, including on the underside of the edge and in a place on the top edge where it had been repaired even before the installation. I have contacted the kitchen designer, but he has not responded yet.

I have a feeling that we'll be replacing all this granite within the next few years, using a fabricator that stands behind its work.
